Third party sustainability certifications explained

Drax is committed to ensuring the woody biomass we source comes from forests that are managed in accordance with standards designed to support their health and growth over the long term. By doing this, we can work towards our commitment to deliver positive outcomes for climate, nature and people. Third party certification is a critical part of our due diligence process. Our key certification scheme is the Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP), a scheme specific to the biomass industry. Under the scheme, independent certification bodies audit biomass suppliers against the standards developed by SBP. The standards look holistically across the supply chain to ensure that ecosystems remain healthy and resilient, focusing on verifying the legality and sustainability of feedstock used in biomass production. All of the biomass we use and produce is certified by SBP. SBP certified biomass is divided into two different categories, called claims, which are either SBP-compliant or SBP-controlled. Both claims meet rigorous sustainability requirements and are verified by independent auditors annually.

SBP-compliant biomass
Biomass produced in conformance with SBP standards. A link to the standards is here.
SBP-controlled biomass

Biomass produced from feedstock carrying an SBP-recognised controlled claim, such as FSC® Controlled Wood (FSC Licence Code C119787) and PEFC Controlled Sources.
